Beyond Borders

Nakuru, Kenya

Kenya has a history that is deeply bloodied with tribal clashes, leaving Kenya not only socially fractured but geographically segregated as well. Millions of Kenyans have been displaced as a result of ethnic warfare and this has ultimately led to generational trauma.

The displaced community in Nakuru resides at the town’s dumpsite, lacking access to healthcare, education, and employment opportunities. Though lacking healthcare, the elderly of the community treat each patient as if they were their grandchild. Though surrounded by trash, the children often grab newspapers off the floor, eager to learn even one new piece of information. Though unemployed, the adults still manage to find moments of laughter and joy. The community perseveres against all odds, and although their solidarity is admirable, we knew that these people needed something more than unity: they needed help.

In response to what we had witnessed in Nakuru, we partnered with a local movement to specifically help those currently affected by tribal conflict. Together, we are working to support displaced peoples in Nakuru by providing clothing, basic health care and food. This is only the beginning; ultimately, we hope to work towards more sustainable and permanent pathways to progress.

The people of Nakuru, Kenya, with their unwavering perseverance, ineffable hardship, and warm kindness, have truly changed our lives; we have every intention of doing the very same for them.
